A GOLDEN NUGGET IN HISTORY:
The origin story of Confidence Reef
#YeTaleOfOlde in South Africa
Before Krugersdorp bustled and Roodepoort became grand, what was there?
Some confidence, then irony, then great serendipity.
…But first, the Dayenu team would like to thank the ‘Kloofendal Friends.’
Historian and curator Rod Kruger encouraged our exercise last year (2023); where Dayenu’s Rock Engineering HOD, Ronny Arlow, furnished some of our Mining Engineers, such as Carla Greyling and Thomas Oates, with training on Geotechnical Data Gathering and Scanline Mapping (per Dayenu). We particularly enjoyed having a moment to play… with our LiDAR equipment.
…Now… back to the ‘tale of olde’…
In the 1880’s, a pair of Struben brothers founded the Confidence Reef. Apparently, farms in this vicinity produced meh – not much for investment.
Yet, the surrounding mountains had stories of intrigue…
To the brothers, what they told – was: GOLD
They bought land with conviction –that was soon to be confirmed – ‘twas not quite just a fiction’.
One broke off surface-rock, panned it in the stream nearby and (somewhat) later, behold, 913 ounces announced it as the Rand’s first extraction site for payable gold…
which quickly was out-tapped.
#NeverTheLess, the brothers’ chosen name remained apt.
Prospectors in the area had flooded,
the city’s infrastructure had budded,
And the old mine is now nestled in the #KloofendalNatureReserve;
a gorgeous site that all residents should #supportlocal and preserve.
